Online Conversations and Boundaries in a Relationship
There is no single rule for every couple; honest expectations and mutual respect matter more than guessing what counts as a boundary.

People in relationships may have different views about chatting with new people online. For some couples, casual conversation is unremarkable. Others may have agreements about flirting, private messages, or moving a conversation off a platform. There is no useful universal answer if the people involved have never discussed their expectations.
Talk about the boundary, not just the label
Instead of arguing over whether an interaction technically counts as “cheating,” describe what felt uncomfortable and why. Ask your partner what they consider respectful, and explain your own expectations without threats or surveillance.
Be honest and consistent
Secrecy can damage trust even when the original conversation felt harmless. If you would feel uneasy hiding the interaction, that may be a reason to pause and talk.
A good agreement is mutual, clear, and open to discussion. It should not require either person to give up all privacy or friendships. If a conversation with a stranger starts to cross an agreed boundary, step back and address it honestly.
